Steel Mill Gearbox Rebuild, Foundry Drive Repair and Custom Mill Gears
Rolling mills, continuous casters, ladle cranes and furnace charging equipment run drives built for plants that have been rebuilt around them several times over. We manufacture replacement gearing and rebuild the units.
Steel and foundry drives we work on
Mill drives see the hardest combination in industry: very high torque, reversing duty, shock loading and radiant heat.
- Roughing and finishing mill pinion stands and gear boxes
- Reversing mill main drive gearing
- Continuous caster withdrawal and straightener drives
- Coiler and uncoiler mandrel gearing
- Runout table and roller table drives
- Ladle and charging crane hoist, travel and slew gearboxes
- Furnace tilt drives and electrode mast gearing
- Sinter plant and pellet plant conveyor reducers
- Sand plant, muller and shakeout drives in foundries
- Billet and bloom pusher gearing
Mill gear manufacture
Double helical and helical mill gearing cut to the existing centres, including pinion stand sets matched as a pair.
Gearbox rebuild
Strip, inspect and report, then replace the gearing and restore the journals. Housings that have been in service since the plant was built usually stay.
Obsolete mill drive support
Where the drive predates the current plant owner, we reverse engineer the internals from the worn components.
What usually arrives from a steel plant
Reversing duty and shock loading show up in predictable ways.
| What fails | What we supply |
|---|---|
| Tooth breakage on mill pinion sets | Matched replacement pinion pair cut to the existing centres |
| Caster drive gearbox worn beyond limits | Rebuild with new gearing and restored journals |
| Crane hoist gearbox with no spares | Internals reverse engineered from the removed parts |
| Runout table drive shaft failure | Replacement shafts machined complete |
| Scored and fretted spline connections | New splined shafts and couplings to the measured fits |
| Furnace tilt drive worm set wiped | Replacement worm and wheel as a matched pair |
Working from no drawings
Most of the drive components we are asked for are no longer manufactured, and the original drawings are long gone. We reverse engineer from the worn part itself: the component is measured, the tooth geometry and fits are established, material is confirmed, and a replacement is cut to suit the existing housing, shafts and bearings so nothing else in the assembly has to change.
Where a gear has failed because of a design limitation rather than wear, we will say so and propose the change rather than reproduce the fault.
Quality and documentation
Euro Gear operates an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality management system. EN 10204 3.1 material certification is available on request, with mill traceability. Components bound for the United Kingdom or European Union ship as partly completed machinery with a Declaration of Incorporation.
Lead times
We are built around planned work: shutdowns, turnarounds and scheduled overhauls booked in advance, where the component has to be right and on site for a known date. Tell us the outage date and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet it. We do not offer field service or emergency breakdown attendance.
Common questions
- Can you cut double helical mill gearing?
- Yes. Double helical gearing is standard work for us, including matched pinion stand sets.
- Our mill drive is older than our records. Can you still help?
- Yes. We work from the components and the housing rather than from paperwork, which is how most of this work arrives.
- Can you supply to a scheduled mill outage?
- Tell us the outage date at enquiry. We are built around planned work and will tell you honestly whether the date is achievable.
- Do you provide material certification?
- EN 10204 3.1 with mill traceability on request.
- Do you attend site?
- No. We manufacture and rebuild in the shop; we do not offer field service.
Send us the part
A photograph of the nameplate and the worn component is usually enough for us to tell you whether we can help. Drawings are welcome but not required.
