How Gears Work

Understanding the principles of mechanical advantage

Mechanical Advantage

Gears multiply torque while reducing speed, or increase speed while reducing torque, depending on the gear ratio.

Gear Ratio = Output Teeth / Input Teeth

Power Transmission

Gears efficiently transfer rotational motion and power between shafts, maintaining consistent velocity ratios.

Power (P) = Torque (τ) × Angular Velocity (ω)

Direction Control

Different gear configurations can reverse rotation direction or transmit power at various angles.

Opposite rotation for external gears

Speed Reduction

Multiple gear stages compound reduction ratios, achieving high torque multiplication in compact spaces.

Total Ratio = Ratio₁ × Ratio₂ × ... × Ratioₙ
